How to pack a self storage unit properly
A well-packed storage unit is easier to use, easier to access and makes better use of the space you are paying for.
Put heavy items on the bottom
Start with solid furniture, sturdy boxes and heavier equipment. Lighter boxes and fragile items should sit higher up so they are not crushed.
Leave an access aisle
If you expect to visit the unit regularly, leave a narrow walkway from the door into the unit. Put frequently used items near the front.
Use consistent box sizes
Boxes of similar sizes stack more efficiently and are less likely to shift. Label at least two sides so you can identify them without moving everything around.
Break down furniture where practical
Removing legs from tables, dismantling bed frames and standing flat items vertically can free up useful floor area.
Protect furniture and appliances
Use moving blankets, covers or clean sheets to protect surfaces. Make sure appliances are clean and dry before storage and leave doors slightly open where appropriate.
Avoid creating unstable stacks
Do not build tall stacks that can topple when boxes are moved. Keep weight balanced and avoid leaning heavy items against roller doors.
